Ant and Dec are Britain’s most loved TV presenting duo but in a surprise reveal, the pair nearly went their separate ways.
Speaking to The Guardian, Declan Donnelly confessed he thought about parting ways from Ant McPartlin after McPartlin’s drink-driving scandal saw him withdraw from all television commitments and re-enter rehab.
“I’d be lying if I said the thought hadn’t crossed my mind. Of course, I thought about it,” Dec said. “Ant went away, and he had a lot of work to do on himself. He had a lot of thinking to do. Equally, I did. I thought about every eventuality and every permutation.”
He added: “Ultimately, the number one thing I wanted to happen was that Ant came back and he was healthy and happy, and we got our relationship back on track and we carried on.”
McPartlin was fined £86,000 and banned from driving for 20 months after he crashed his car in London last year and drank twice the legal alcohol limit. Ant entered rehab, leaving Dec by himself to host Britain’s Got Talent solo and saw Holly Willoughby join him for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
“For the first time in many years, all we talked about were deep things like how we felt, and what the future held, and where we were, and all the chaos that has come along, especially for me,” Ant said.
The pair have now talked things out and began taping the upcoming series of Britain’s Got Talent, which begins next weekend, back in January.
“It’s a testament to us having been around so long and people having grown up with us that they’ve allowed us – well, allowed me – to come back,” Ant said.
Britain’s Got Talent returns to ITV next Saturday.
