Anthony McPartlin, one half of double act Ant and Dec, is heading to rehab for drug and alcohol addiction.
The 41-year-old admitted he has ‘let people down’ and revealed the is spending the next two months in a rebab clinic for addiction to prescription drugs along with alcohol.
“The first step is to admit to yourself you need help,” McPartlin said in a statement to The Sun. “I’ve let people down. I’m truly sorry. I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I’m truly sorry. I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends through this really difficult time.”
According to the paper, The Britain’s Got Talent host had suffered from depression and pain from knee surgery. Combined together, he began to mix prescription pain medication with alcohol.
The Sun also revealed Ant had a very difficult time telling his best friend and co-presenter Declan Donnelly about his struggles.
“For Dec it was a bit of a bombshell hearing about these addiction problems,” a source told the publication. “He had no idea of the full extent of the torment his best friend was going through.”
The good news for the hosting duo is they have no television commitments until November when I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! returns to ITV. That will leave Ant with nearly five months to get better and recover.
It was also revealed that Dec is the one who took it on to call rehab facilities to find his best friend help, not thinking of anything else than to get Ant the help he needs.
“It would have been easy for Dec to worry about their brand and the damage this could do to their careers but he didn’t think about that at all — he cares about Ant as a friend and wants to help him,” the source added.
