Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opened to a whopping $424.1 million worldwide opening, making it the fourth-biggest worldwide opening in history.
$36 million of the $424.1 million came from a record-breaking 945 IMAX screens and 59 percent of the total came from the 3D screens,
The superhero film grossed $254 million in its overseas debut, making it the fifth biggest overseas debut ever. Its $170.1 million debut in America beat out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to become the sixth-biggest domestic opening in box office history – including the biggest Warner Bros opening in history.
Batman v Superman also set a record for DC Comics movies, beating out the $160.9 million made by The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight‘s $158.4 million. The flick also beat out The Hunger Games’ $152.5 million for best March opening in history.
The flick was the biggest overseas debut of all time for a superhero film and the second-biggest Warner Bros. foreign debut behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It made $21.9 million in the UK, the largest opening in 2016 as well as the biggest superhero debut ever.
Batman v Superman played on 40,000 screens in 66 markets not counting America. In Mexico, the film grossed on $18.6m on 4,300 screens. Meanwhile, in Italy the movie opened on Wednesday and added $5.8 million to the totals.
