Big Brother returned to Australia for the first time in five years earlier this month and the fans loved it so much, the show will return for another season next year.
Channel Seven has confirmed it has renewed the reality series for another season in 2021, the 13th overall. Sonia Kruger will return as the host of the show and filming is set to begin in the coming months.
“It’s been fantastic to reunite Big Brother with his fans and see a whole new generation of Australians fall in love with the show,” Kruger said in a statement. “He’ll be back cheekier than ever so our new housemates better be ready to play. Big Brother is about to go to the next level and I’m totally here for it!”
TV Blackbox is reporting production for the new season will begin in August with filming scheduled for October and December. The website also reports that there could be an All-Stars twist with former housemates returning to play the brand new game.
The show’s renewal should be no surprise given it has been the biggest hit of 2020 and the biggest show on Seven. The first week of the show brought high numbers to Seven and its digital platform 7Plus. The launch attracted 866,000 viewers for the main show and over 900,000 tuned in for the first eviction, topping all three key demos.
As a whole, Big Brother is outrating Survivor: All-Stars by a wide margin with viewing figures hovering around 700,000-800,000.
“Big Brother is a television super brand and this season has been embraced by audiences around Australia,” Network Programming Director Angus Ross said. It’s the most talked-about show in Australia, as well as being the most streamed – and genuine social media phenomenon. We’re excited to be working with Endemol Shine Australia – who produce some of the best TV in the country – to deliver a new season of the reimagined Big Brother to Australian viewers.”
Production company Endemol Shine Australia wanted to revamp how Big Brother is played and now that it is a hit in Australia, it will be interesting to see if other countries will follow a similar format.
Big Brother continues Sunday at 7.00 pm on Channel Seven in Australia.
