Channel 5 has reportedly threatened to axe Big Brother if producers don’t work to improve the show.
The Daily Star reports that the broadcaster told Endemol UK it has one year to revamp the show or it will be axed. The show saw a free fall in the ratings as the ‘civilian’ version of the show averaged below one million viewers for the first time ever.
A source told the tabloid: “It’s simple. Either change it or we’ll chop it. It is a big show for us but it needs to be re-invigorated to survive in the current climate. It needs to look and feel different.”
Big Brother was beaten on a nightly basis by Love Island, which had record viewing figures for ITV2. Meanwhile, the civilian Big Brother averaged 865,000 in the overnights and 1.2 million in the officials.
Meanwhile, the summer version of Celebrity Big Brother saw its lowest rated final ever. 1.6 million tuned in to watch Sarah Harding take home the crown in last Friday’s final. The 20th series averaged 1.3 million in the overnights and as of this writing is averaging 1.8 in the official ratings.
Channel 5 has one year left on their current contract that is set to expire next summer. There will be two celebrity series and one more ‘civilian’ series.
Celebrity Big Brother returns to Channel 5 in the new year for its 21st series.
