Celebrity Big Brother 2018 opened with the lowest viewing figures ever to launch a January series.
An average of 2.07 million viewers tuned in to the woman-themed launch episode according to the overnight ratings. The figure is down 200,000 from last year’s January launch with had 2.3 million, but up 300,000 on the most recent summer run.
Celebrity Big Brother was beaten out by BBC One’s McMafia, which had 4.8 million viewers at 9 PM. Meanwhile on ITV, The Greatest TV Moments of All Time pulled in 2.2 million.
The feeling is the ‘Year of the Woman’ theme of the show put off some men from viewing the programme. Others were not impressed with the lineup of eight women who entered the house, with several tweeting there were no big names.
Fans are hoping this year will see an increase in viewers as well as interest so the show’s life can be extended.
It is not a good start for fans of the Channel 5 show who are hoping to save it from being axed. The current contract between Endemol and C5 expires at the end of the year and a renewal is currently up in the air.
While the series began with nearly 2.1 million viewers, it remains to be seen how many of those will stick around for the first highlight show tonight and the rest of the series.
Celebrity Big Brother continues on Channel 5 nightly at 9 PM.
