Is Big Brother about to make a return to our screens?
According to The Daily Star Sunday, Channel 4 has reportedly been having “secret talks” with Endemol Shine to revive Celebrity Big Brother with the plan for it to air in January 2021, a little after two years off air.
“In recent months Channel 4’s suffered a ratings crisis”, a source told the paper. “Discussions with Endemol have been happening since before Christmas, and now Channel 4 execs are starting to plan budgets”
The tabloid reports talks have been underway for over a month and despite being in the early stages, are serious enough to begin budget plans and theme talks. It’s also claimed the new series would be branded ‘reborn’ and feature celebrities looking to rebuild their image after a public downfall.
The news comes just a month after Channel 4 director of programs Ian Katz said he would “keep an open mind” about possibly bringing Big Brother back to its original home.
“I’d keep an open mind about pretty much any format,” Katz said at the time. “One of the things we’ve learned in the last few years is how effectively almost any historic format can be rebooted in creative ways.”
Channel 4 was reached for comment and has denied any talks to revive Big Brother are taking place.
“It’s completely untrue,” C4 said in a statement. “We have no plans for Big Brother to return to Channel 4.”
Big Brother originally ran from 2000-2010 on Channel 4 and before it was picked up by Channel 5 in 2011 until it was axed in 2018.
