JAGMAC are: Jared, Angelique, Gabriel, Manjo, Alyssa, and CJ. Born and raised in Baltimore (USA), the band consists of four brothers and two sisters aged between 15-25.
Reality Box sat down with the band to chat about their impressive mix of talents, new music and their influences!
JAGMAC were discovered whilst performing a series of small gigs in their hometown, after word spread, music executives from De Angelis Entertainment made the journey to check them out and they were signed on the spot!
Over the past 12 months JAGMAC have been writing in the UK as well as releasing their debut single ‘So Good’ which was written with Sonny J Mason (Ce lo Green, Aston Merrygold, Little Mix) on a recent trip to the UK.
Last year the multi-talented band performed at one of the biggest events of the year “Total Access Live”, where they wowed crowds with their performances of singing, dancing and martial arts.
How does it feel to be given the opportunity to perform at Summer Sessions, like so many successful artists have done before you?
Having the opportunity to perform at Promo Only Summer Sessions this year was such an honor! Lady Gaga and Jason Derulo opened this event a few years ago and now we got to do the same, is mind-blowing.
For those who won’t have heard your music, how would you describe your sound?
Our sound is a fusion of the Jackson 5 with the Black Eyed Peas. It’s fun and funky with a good beat and we like to bring out our personalities in the songs which makes the sound unique and our own.
How does it feel to be working in the studio with some of the biggest names in music?
It’s such a blessing being able to work with some of the top music producers and writers in the studio! They have really helped us grow in so many ways and have given us many tips along the way to help us develop our own special JAGMAC sound.
Plus it’s also fun to listen to their personal stories of what it’s like to work with famous artists you hear on the radio every single day.
We hear every one of you have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, should we expect to see any moves in upcoming videos? And will security in the future not be an issue?
That’s right, we all practice Taekwondo and Eskrima which is Filipino stick-fighting! Martial arts is something we all started at 3 years old and has benefited us in many ways. As far as security goes, it’s always nice to have a few tricks up your sleeve if worse comes to worse!
Being a band obviously comes with its difficulties but being a family as well is a whole other level, how do you manage working with your brothers and sisters every day?
Not going to lie, being in a band with your family members definitely has its ups and downs. We’re just like any other family so sometimes we’ll have our disagreements. The funny thing is, if we do get into an argument, since we all know martial arts it turns into a big fight scene out of a movie… Only kidding!
But in all honesty working together has been one of the best experiences of our life. We all have a common love for music which brings us together and unifies us as a group.
We love being able to do what we do as a family and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Where do you feel you each fit into this group? Do you all play a different role? Is anyone the lead?
We’re all equal and yes everyone has their roles whether at singing or rapping etc. It’s being able to highlight those abilities and blend the six voices together which unifies our sound as one.
Your dance moves have been described as “jaw dropping”, but have any of you ever hurt yourselves with a move that was too ambitious?
Luckily none of us have ever been hurt trying to learn a dance move, knock on wood! Although it’s easy to see how breakdancing and potentially breaking a bone could go hand-in-hand, huh?
There’s quite a mix of ages between you all, but for the younger ones of you – how are you finding balancing school and the life of a musician?
School is equally as important if not more important than music to us! The two eldest have graduated college already while Manjo, Gabriel and Angelique are still in college now. Jared is finishing up high school and he is home schooled.
Our mom travels with us every single day and follows a curriculum with Jared. With the crazy lifestyle of a musician and always being on the road, it’s definitely important to stay on top of school work wherever you go.
Are there any groups or artists you’ve drawn inspiration from?
I think individually we all have our certain artists that we like and are inspired by. But collectively as a group we would still have to say the Jackson 5 and the Black Eyed Peas.
