Former Big Brother spin-off show presenter and TalkRadio host Iain Lee has revealed details of his time on the Channel 5 show, plus what he’s up to now.
The host has a hilarious new talk show on TalkRadio, and we spoke to him exclusively.
RealityBox: Many of our readers will remember you from presenting various Big Brother spin-off shows including ‘Big Brother’s Big Ears’ (gone far too soon!) and Big Brother’s Bit on the Side alongside Rylan Clarke-Neal.
Did you enjoy your time on the show?
Iain Lee: I absolutely loved it! I was on all the spin-off shows from Dermot hosting, through George Lamb right up to Rylan at the end. Loved it all. Rylan is just the nicest man in the world, an absolute gentleman.
I had lots of fun moments on the show, but I guess the most memorable for me was having a go at a gentleman who I thought had been a bully. Saying that, I can’t remember his name so it couldn’t have been that memorable.
The whole thing was a lot of fun. I preferred it when I was a guest instead of being a full on host, I was allowed to get away with more then. I knew that once I became a full-time co host I would be pulled in a bit.
RealityBox: I remember when you presented The Lost Initiative, a podcast turned vodcast about the TV show Lost for Sky One, I loved you on that! Are you enjoying any other shows now that Lost has been off the air for a whole 7 years now
Iain Lee: No. I’ve given up on TV. I felt so betrayed by the last 20 minutes of Lost. It really was a letdown. I’ve been hurt by several other shows – Fringe and Battlestar Galactica being two examples of shows that had no idea how to end. I am watching Better Call Saul, but I don’t like it. Nothing happens but Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean are just so watchable.
RealityBox: Many people will be interested to hear that you have been working as a talk radio host for a long time now!
Iain Lee: Being a radio host has been my main source of income for the last 13 years. I love it. The perfect job. I’m not a music DJ but a phone in host, so I get to argue a lot! Which suits me fine.
RealityBox: Could you tell us about your show?
Iain Lee: Right now I’m working on talkRADIO. That’s the name of the station! People think it’s a genre. You can listen on DAB, smartphone app, on the TuneIn or Radioplayer app or online at www.talkradio.co.uk I do weeknights from 10pm.
It’s fun. I tend to avoid the heavy stuff like Brexit and Trump. A lot of phone in radio is very angry. Stephen Colbert has a saying ‘If we’re not scaring you, then we’re not doing it right’ and a lot of phone in radio works like. My show is different. It’s a celebration. We embrace everything that is good.
Saying that, it’s a very open show. I talk about my mental health issues and that allows other people to share their intimate stories. But it’s not all heavy.
Tonight we are doing ‘have you ever been drunk with a teacher?’ The best topic recently was ‘rumours about teachers’. Strangely we had loads of people calling in saying there was a rumour at their school that a teacher had a wooden tit. If you have a RAJAR diary, tick it please!
RealityBox: Can our readers call in?
Iain Lee: Oh yes! Please do. Anyone is welcome. Monday – friday between 10 and 1am 0344 499 1000. ooh, there’s a daily podcast as well.
RealityBox: You have previously worked in radio doing other talk based shows on Absolute Radio, BBC Three Counties Radio and others – Are there any aspects of the older shows you miss on the TalkRadio show?
Iain Lee: I miss doing some of the heavier stories I would do on the BBC. I do enjoy arguing with Councillors and MP’s. But right now I am very happy. This is the perfect job and it’s exciting to be doing something unique.
Honestly, I can’t think of one show in the world that is like this.
Hey, did I mention my other show? A weekly podcast with my friend Katherine Boyle? It’s silly at a time when we need real silliness. It’s called the Rabbit Hole and it’s available on iTunes and all the usual places, or you can get it here: https://www.acast.com/therabbithole
RealityBox: Thanks Iain! As a listener to your shows for many years I can honestly recommend it to anyone reading! Thank you for your time.
You can tune in live to Iain Lee on TalkRadio Monday to Friday 10pm to 1am via DAB, online via the TalkRadio website or catch up with podcasts or listen to full shows again via the TalkRadio website.
