New Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith was going to turn down the new role on the Channel 4 series for a very surprising reason.
Leith replaces Mary Berry when the show launches on Channel 4, later this year.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, she revealed she almost thought twice about joining Bake Off, because of her role as a health food campaigner.
“I really thought twice about accepting Bake Off,” Leith said.
“I’ve spent my life campaigning about children learning to cook and healthy meals in schools, but I reasoned that baking is the best way to get people into general cooking.
“And that’s what we need the nation to do: get interested in the kitchen.”
She’s also had to adjust to new life as a Bake Off judge, revealing Channel 4 sent security to her house when the announcement was made.
“On the day that they announced who the line-up was, they wanted to send a close protection officer. I said, ‘Don’t be ridiculous, we absolutely do not need a copper standing there looking’,” she recalled.
“But they said, ‘No, no, no, we really must just to be on the safe side’. What did they think is going to happen? I’m not likely to be trolled. This is a nice family show.”
The Great British Bake Off returns to TV on Channel 4 later this year.
