Following the massive success of the last series, Love Island made its highly anticipated return and set a record in the process.
An average of 3 million viewers tuned in as host Caroline Flack welcomed the brand new Islanders to a summer in the villa to win a £50,000 prize. The number peaked with 3.4 million viewers as the episode went on and had a 16.4 percent audience share.
The figure is up by a whopping two million from last year’s launch show and up 500,000 on the series finale from a year ago. The number was also the highest-rating programme across all channels at 9 pm.
The average of nearly 3 million viewers also gave ITV2 its biggest ever audience. Elsewhere, over on BBC One was Suffragettes, which averaged 1.73 million.
Love Island continues nightly on ITV2.
