He’s back! Sir Tom Jones is returning to The Voice UK on ITV this Saturday, and he can’t wait.
Joining Tom will be Jennifer Hudson, will.i.am and Gavin Rossdale hoping to find the next big thing.
The winner of the ITV show will get a life changing record contract with Polydor Records.
Tom has revealed he’s glad to be back, and who his biggest competition is on the show.
How does it feel to be back on the show?
Tremendous. The talent is very good. The calibre is high. Sitting back in the chair, it was like I had never left. Between series there is a gap anyway so this has just been a longer gap but I have been so busy I haven’t noticed.
Does it feel different?
It feels the same as it has ever been. There are a lot of people working on the show that are the same. Will.i.am of course is still there. With the two new coaches it is just like starting a new series, like when Kylie took over from Jessie J or when Ricky Wilson took over from Danny O’Donoghue or when Rita Ora came on.
How is the chemistry on the new panel?
The chemistry is great. Jennifer is tremendous, she really is. She is a great singer, there is no doubt about that, but you don’t know what they are going to be like in that chair, but she is coming across very strong. Gavin is very meticulous in the way he is, he is very picky in who he chooses. Sometimes it is just a fight between me and him for people.
You and Gavin seem to have similar tastes in singers…
Yes, that is what we have realised!
Is Gavin your main competition?
Maybe, but then again you really can’t predict as it can go in any direction. Music and those that make it can’t just be put into formulas, it doesn’t work that way.
Is it going to be a competitive series?
It is always competitive, that is always the same, especially when more than one chairs turns. It is just as competitive now as it was on day one of the first series. That has not changed. If you turn and you really want that person you have to do the best you possibly can to get them.
Did you know Gavin or Jennifer before the show?
I had met Gavin a few times but I didn’t know him. Jennifer, I had never met although of course I knew of her. I had seen her plenty of times and listened to her voice.
It looks like you are all getting on well…
The nature of what we do, we get on well, but the coaches have always got on well from day one of the show. We are four coaches and we know what the people are going through on stage, we all feel for them and we have all got that same thing in mind, but you have got to compete when the chairs turn.
Luckily enough since the show started I haven’t come across anybody that has been anything but great and lovely. And that is like it is now. As far as the girls are concerned, with Jessie it was great, Kylie I have known for a long time and Rita Ora really stepped up to the plate.
Jennifer Hudson has gone right in there. Will is still smart, crazy, creative Will and Gavin is the rock guy who not only comes with a lot of experience, he’s also a real gentleman and he knows how to get his point across.
What can singers in Team Tom expect?
I am going to get as much out of them as I possibly can. If I hear a song that I feel that singer can do, sometimes they think they can’t do it and I have got to work to reassure them that they can.
You were the first ever coach to win The Voice UK. Can you go all the way again this year?
Anybody could win this year. The only thing I know is that they have all got voices, they can all sing.
What do you reckon to the format change?
It is tough but the thing we realise is that the contestants know that when they come on if we don’t turn they have to go. There is no explaining why, so they are prepared for it.
It is a test in itself, if you are going to crumble after going to an audition and not get through, you are not prepared for the big time. There is a test right there.
How important is music to you?
Music is my life. I live for music. I listen to all kinds of singers all the time. Sometimes people think I am going to go for a certain type of singer on the show but that is not true, as long as they have the necessary basic skills and come across as being real I’ll press the button.
It could be a young girl to an older guy. It doesn’t matter. If I hear something I like I will go for it.
The Voice UK launches on ITV at 8pm on 7 January 2017.
