After weeks of auditions, it was finally time to do battle on The Voice UK 2018. Coaches Olly Murs, Sir Tom Jones, Jennifer Hudson, and will.i.am all got their teams together and made some tough choices on who to put through.
In case you missed it, here is a quick recap of the first night of battle rounds with the final decision, along with any steals.
Team Olly was first up with Chris James against Holly Ellison. They were given I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) by Meatloaf & Lorraine Crosby.
After their performance, Olly was faced with a tough decision. After getting feedback from the other coaches, the “Troublemaker” singer decided on Holly as the winner. Chris was eliminated after no one decided to use their steal on him.
Team Tom was up next with their first battle pairing of the night. Eliza Gutteridge went up against Courtney O’Neil as they were singing Fight Song by Rachel Platten.
Following their rendition, it was time for Sir Tom to make his decision. After getting feedback from his fellow coaches, he picked Eliza as the winner. Since Courtney was not stolen, she was eliminated.
Team Will was next with Mark Asari against duo Loaded Sista. Will gave them the song Don’t Let Go by En Vogue. The song was a bit of a struggle for the girls, who felt it was out of their comfort zone.
After an interesting version of the song, it was time for Will’s verdict. Despite some of his coaches feedback, he ultimately decided on Mark, meaning Twisted Sista’s time in the competition was over.
Will quickly put together his second battle pairing of the night. This time, Tai went up against Kade Smith. The coach gave them Ben E King’s Stand By Me.
The performance was easily the best of the night so far, leaving Will with an extremely tough choice. Will decided on Taj as the winner, but it was not goodbye for Kade. Jennifer, Olly, and Tom all pressed their button to steal him. However, he decided on joining Team Olly.
Team J-Hud was up next with their first battle pairing of the evening. She put Belle Vocci against Scarlett Quiggley, giving them an Opera version of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit.
The song choice did not please fans who took to social media to voice their disapproval. After the performance, Jennifer debated and chose Belle as the winner, Scarlett was not stolen and sent home.
Team Tom’s second battle of the night saw the most controversial moment of the night. Simon Davies was paired up with Lucy Milburn and given Sam Smith’s Too Good At Goodbyes to perform.
After some debate, Tom chose Lucy. The decision left the coaches, viewers, and host Emma Willis in shock. Simon was not stolen and was eliminated.
The final battle of the night belonged to Team Will. He paired Donel Magena and Rhianna Abrey. The song was Rain by The Script.
The battle was easily the best of the night as Will chose Donel to go into the knockouts. It was not all bad news for Rhianna as Jennifer and Tom hit their button to steal her. However, she elected to go on Team J-Hud.
The Voice UK continues next weekend with the second week of Battle Rounds.
