Big Brother USA is back for its 23rd season and this time, there’s more risk and rewards as the newest hamsters will spend the next two months competing to grab the massive $750,000 cash prize that awaits the winner.
This year, the house has been transformed into the “BB Beach House” but the season has been given a gambling theme. So in the spirit of that, host Julie Chen-Moonves welcomed 16 new houseguests and explained they will have to take risks to earn big rewards.
The first four houseguests to enter were Derek F., farmer guy Frenchie, a lawyer but will lie about being a lawyer, Xavier, and Travis. Julie explains the guys must match the pieces of a plexiglass puzzle to the sample puzzle that’s sitting on an easel. Whoever wins goes into the last round to compete for the right to be HoH.
Frenchie wins the opening kick-off competition. The first four girls to enter were Whitney, Azah, Britini, and Alyssa. Whitney ended up winning the kickoff competition in the second round. The next group of boys was Christian, Derek X., Brent, and Kyland. This time, it would be Christian winning the competition and from the final group of girls, Claire.
Once all the winners were selected, Julie informed the houseguests they would be playing the season (well, at least 2-3 weeks of it) in teams of four. The competition winners were the team captains.
The Jokers: Frenchie (captain) Azah, Britini, Derek F.
The Aces: Whitney (captain) Brent, Derek X., Hannah
The Kings: Christian (captain) Alyssa, Xavier, Sarah Beth
The Queens: Claire (captain) Kyland, Tiffany, Travis
It was then time for all four teams to go head to head in the first Head of Household competition of the summer. This season, if any member of your team becomes HOH, you and your teammates are automatically safe for the week. Frenchie won the power this week, so he and his team are safe for the week.

Although, Julie presented Frenchie with the first double-or-nothing offer, keeping with the Big Risks and Big Rewards theme for the season. He could roll some large dice on a nearby table and successfully complete it in 45 seconds, he and his entire team will earn safety for one more week. That’s right, two weeks of safety. However, if he loses then he and his team aren’t safe and he loses his HoH.
Frenchie correctly decides to not take the risk and keeps his HoH power.
Big Brother USA continues on Sunday night at 8/7c on CBS and Paramount+ with Frenchie’s first set of nominations and a new game, the Wild Card Competition, which will be played and will give the houseguests a chance to take a big risk for a game-changing reward.
