After being off on air for over two years, Simon Cowell is reportedly planning for The X Factor to return in 2022 with some changes.
The singing competition has been off the air for over a year, with its last series airing in 2019. The news comes with Britain’s Got Talent being off air until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Sun is reporting Cowell is planning to bring the show back with a bang with some changes made to the format.
“Simon wants to keep everyone on his sets safe and let 2021 play out,” a source told the tabloid. “But he feels, after a much-needed break, X Factor 2022 will be good to go, with some changes.”
The music mogul feels streaming is the future for TV and has asked his team to begin working on new formats for streaming.
“He’s asked his team to examine what TV formats could be ready by next year and feels channels and streaming platforms are in need of new ideas and there are opportunities to shape the future of TV,” the source added.
The last series of The X Factor aired in 2019, a Celebrity version won by Meghan McKenna. That series followed a special week long show called “X Factor: The Band”, which was not well received by the audience.
At last year’s Edinburgh TV Festival, ITV boss Kevin Lygo said the show will return “when the time is right” but warned to be wary of changes.
“It was our most successful entertainment show for the best part of a decade and you need to be wary of changes, we all think there were too many changes towards the end of the run,” he said. “I’m sure X Factor will be back at some stage, it’s really when is the right moment.”
