Spencer Sutherland became the first contestant to be eliminated from The X Factor 2017 live shows, it was revealed on Saturday night.
The singing competition went live for the first time this series with a brand new format, seeing contestants get eliminated both Saturday and Sunday night. After a night of performances from the Boys and Girls categories, it was time for the results.
Host Dermot O’Leary returned with the tense results, revealing Spencer and Leon Mallett were in the bottom two. It was then announced that Leon had gotten more votes, meaning Spencer was the first to be eliminated. Louis Walsh also lost his first act of the series.
“I want to thank the UK for taking me in open arms,” Spencer said following his elimination.
The new format also saw a new Saturday Night Champion be crowned, which saw fan favourite Grace Davies taking the honors. She will go up against the Sunday Night Champion for the right to win a trip to New York City to meet Pink at Madison Square Garden.
Dermot pulled a Olly Murs type gaff when he told Grace she’d be going to see Pink in New York, not realizing she’d only advanced to tomorrow night’s showdown. It looks like this new format is too confusing even for Derm!
“I’ve got to win it first,” Grace told Dermot in response.
Simon Cowell missed the show as he continues to recover from a fall he suffered yesterday morning. It is thought he will be returning to the show tomorrow for the second live show of the weekend.
The X Factor continues on Sunday with the Groups and Overs battling it out on stage at 7pm on ITV.
